August Deadlines (and a little reflection)

Holy crap, it’s August!

Well, here are some upcoming deadlines for science fiction, fantasy, horror and steampunk publications that pay either royalties or at least $.01/word. Don’t forget to check last month’s post for deadlines that might still be fresh!

Corrupts Absolutely – deadline extended to December 1

On Spec Magazine – August 31

As you can see, I haven’t had any time this month to research deadlines. I’ve been dealing with too much other stuff, from work and school and everything else. So maybe next month will be better…

Here’s a thing that I really like, by Ira Glass, that Wil Wheaton posted on his Google+.

Originally from here. I’m taking a lot of comfort from this. I feel like my work is at a crossroads–I’m not as good as I want to be, and I’ve reached a sort of plateau. I can either keep writing and hope to push through, or give up. My writing is just Okay.  Occasionally I churn out something that’s Good but never Spectacular. The trouble is, there’s no road map for getting from Okay to Spectacular. All you can do is keep working, and growing, and trying to improve. Easier said than done–improvement is such a nebulous thing. But hopefully I’ll get there. Just have to “keep plugging,” as my Dad says.

Onwards and upwards! See you at GenCon!

*These are by no means all the existing deadlines in these genres, just the ones that look promising to me. My criteria include markets that pay at least $.01/word and accept electronic submissions. Don’t forget to check last month’s post for deadlines that might still be open!

I’m particularly excited about the Journal of Unlikely Entomology. Who can resist the opportunity to write about bugs?

June Deadlines

I haven’t had much time to look for deadlines recently, so here are a few new ones, plus all the publications from previous entries that are still open. Think of it like a consolidation post for one-stop shopping! As always, I don’t endorse any publisher listed herein, as I’ve only worked with a few of them. If you have a bad experience with any of them, however, please let me know so I can stop promoting their publications.

Columbus Creative Coop: Tales of the Unexpected – June 27

A word about these deadline posts:

I only publish paying short story markets here (and they must pay at least $.01/word unless it’s a contest). Yes, many of these markets can be found on Dark Markets or Duotrope Digest, but I try to eliminate much of the wheat from the chaff; these deadline posts are really just lists of markets to which I want to submit  my work –they’re meant to be an easy reference for me, conveniently posted where other authors can benefit from them! In other words, if your interests lie outside of the science fiction, horror, steampunk, and fantasy genres, or you are okay with being paid less than $.01/word, or you are looking for a place to publish your novel or poetry, then you should definitely do your own research. This list doesn’t include non-paying markets, poetry markets, novel markets, or non-genre markets. It’s also not exhaustive; I can’t guarantee I’m not missing perfectly good markets you might find if you do your own search!

It’s that time again!

Happy new deadlines for May!

As always, I have to thank Dark Markets for some of these links. I don’t endorse any publisher here; submitter beware. I would like to know if you have a bad experience with any of them, however, so I can stop posting their links. Thanks!

A Cornucopia of Deadlines

Don’t forget to check last month’s open anthologies post, as many of them are still accepting submissions.

The deadlines I publish here are generally centered around science fiction, steampunk, and horror anthologies/publications because those are my favorite genres. I cannot vouch for any of these publishers, even the ones I’ve worked with; submitter beware. Please let me know, however, if you have a bad experience with any of these publishers so I can stop promoting their anthologies!

Special thanks must go to Dark Markets and Doug Hagler for providing some of these links. Currently I’m only promoting paying markets, so while other people did suggest other markets I chose not to put them here; if I started listing all the non-paying markets this listing would be much, much too long.

*freshness of deadlines may be greatly exaggerated.

Deadlines, deadlines

So it’s that time again! As I managed to complete both my goal deadlines for February (hooray!), I’m now eyeing upcoming deadlines for March and beyond. Here’s a bevy of choices for aspiring fiction writers:

The Crimson Pact: Volume 2 – June 6

The Mammoth Book of Steampunk – April 1

Appalachian Folklore: Dark Tales of Superstition and Old Wives’ Tales – extended, open until filled

Through the Eyes of the Undead II -April/May (to be announced)

Ocean Stories – March 31

Dreams of Steam II: Of Brass and Bolts – May 31

Penny Dread Tales – Vol. 1 – March 26

How the West Was Wicked – March 31

Mortis Operandi (Supernatural Crime) – Open until filled

Best New Werewolf Tales Vol. 1 – March 31 (note special submission instructions)

Bride of the Golem: An Anthology of Humorous Jewish Horror – March 1 (may be extended to May 1)

Live And Let Undead – March 7

Zombies Without Borders – March 1 (hurry on this one!)

A word to the wise: I have worked with the editor of The Crimson Pact but none of the others. Always review contracts carefully; I don’t guarantee that any of these people are on the level, though I do want to hear about it if you submit to one of these anthologies and get stiffed. That’s good information for me and for other authors to share.

There will be another Innsmouth Free Press anthology coming up but the public announcement has not yet been made. More next month!
